Google describes AI Overviews as a way to get the gist of a question quickly, with links to explore and learn more. Your page can get one of those links on the same terms as an ordinary search result, which is why each answer below starts with Google's own rules. For getting found in Google at all, see why a website does not show up on Google.
What does Google require before a page can appear in AI Overviews?
The page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google lists no other technical requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Do I need an AI text file or special schema markup?
No. Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org markup to appear in its AI features.
What kind of page gets picked as a supporting link?
The same pages Google already likes: crawlable, linked from your other pages, with the important content in text and structured data that matches what visitors see.
Can a robots.txt rule or a noindex tag keep me out?
Yes. A page Google cannot crawl or may not index cannot appear, and the nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet rules limit what Google may quote.
How do I know if my site already appears in AI Overviews?
Open the Performance report in Search Console with the Web search type. Clicks and impressions from AI features are counted there together with ordinary results; Google gives no separate number for them.
How soon can a new page show up there?
Only after it is indexed. Google's URL Inspection help says indexing after a request usually takes a day or so and can take up to a week or two.
Key takeaways
- AI Overviews draw on pages already indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- No special file, markup or trick is needed to qualify.
- Snippet rules such as nosnippet decide what Google may quote from you.
- Search Console counts AI feature traffic inside the Web search type.
Getting your site into the answers your clients read
Only pages Google already shows in its ordinary results can appear in AI Overviews: the rules above are the same ones. If your site does not show up on Google at all, start with these checks.
Once it does, the link under an AI answer goes to a page that answers the question asked. A site that answers few of the questions its clients type leaves Google little of its own to link.
Google gives no separate count for AI Overviews: Search Console counts their clicks together with ordinary results. On one of our own sites, [F17] of the clicks from Google come from searches that start with how, what, why, can or does, from people asking a question.
Research comes before writing. We look up what your clients really ask Google and ChatGPT, leave out what nobody asks, and we write only the articles someone is waiting to read.
For $190, 500 of those questions get an answer on your site, one article each, so your site has a page to link when your clients ask Google or ChatGPT. With an image in every article, it is $470, and you pay once.
Order
Choose how many client questions your site should answer and whether each article gets an image, then leave your website and email.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI Mode different from AI Overviews for site owners?
Google applies the same rules to both: a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet can appear as a supporting link in either.
Can a small business site appear in AI Overviews?
Yes. Google sets no size or brand requirement; the condition is the same for every page.
Does structured data get my page into AI Overviews?
Not on its own. Google asks that structured data match the visible text, and treats it as a help for understanding the page, not a ticket in.
